The OLL library serves as a resource center for students, faculty, and staff. It provides educational and recreational reading materials, as well as a reference section. The Library/Media Center has a collection of over 10,000 books, along with a DVD/video collection of over 400 curriculum and/or literature-based titles, as well as software, digital cameras, digital camcorders, and audiovisual equipment. There are 20 student computers with Internet access, along with a scanner and two printers housed in the library.
The Pre-K4 classes visit the library once a week for a thirty-minute period. Students check out books each week, have a story time, and learn basic library information skills. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade come to the library once a week for a forty-minute period. Students check out books each week, receive instruction in library information skills, and have a story time (Grades K-first). Students in second through fifth grades may also work on various research projects, as assigned by their teachers. Middle School students visit the library once a week for a fifty-minute period. They are able to check out books each week, do research, and receive more intensive instruction in library information skills. Students in fourth through seventh grades participate in a “Reading Buddies” program several times during the year, in which they read to the younger students from the Pre-K3, Pre-K4, K, and Pre-First Grades.
Student computers are used to access the web-based catalog of the library’s collection. These computers also provide Internet access to information resources, such as World Book Online, EBSCO, St. Tammany Parish Public Library, and reference databases provided through the Louisiana State Library. Students in first through seventh grades participate in the web-based Accelerated Reader program. This program gives students access to over 100,000 quizzes created by the Renaissance Learning Company.
The library is open before school and during the entire school day for regularly scheduled class visits, along with additional student visits for research or taking Accelerated Reader quizzes with the permission of the teacher.
